My Poor, Neglected Blog

So I've been neglecting my blog again. It's not on purpose...it just seems to be the thing that gets the least attention when things get busy. I've been working on second quarter tax returns at work and most days by the time I get home, I'm drained. In any case, the returns are just about finished, so I figured I'd try to get back into the swing of things with a simple post. These pictures are of the sunflower that mysteriously began growing in the yard. It now stands about 6 feet tall and has 15-20 blooms (the pictures are a few weeks old).

Someone Had A Bad Night

We found this when we woke up this morning and let the dog out. Someone had run off the road and into the swale in front of our house and took out the mailbox! They were nice enough to leave a note (unsigned) and pile the pieces up for us (can you hear the sarcasm in my typing)! The other pics show the tracks of the car. They had apparently headed into the swale on the opposite side of the driveway and hitting the mailbox (and probably the bottom of their car on the cement over the drainage pipe) appears to have woken (or sobered) them up! It will be interesting to see if anyone actually comes forward and claims responsibility. We are pretty friendly with most of the neighbors so we're waiting to see how we find out "who dun it"...through the grapevine, or directly from the mouth of the "culprit". We have an idea of who it is and don't believe it was in any way intentional. I'm just glad they didn't go through the fence (which we just finished putting up) or worse yet, through the neighbors fence and into her pasture!

Sunflower

I'm very excited about the sunflowers that are growing in the landscaping in the front yard. After looking at the first picture, you're probably thinking, "That's an odd place for a sunflower". I was thinking the same thing...I would have planted it in the back since it's so tall. But, I didn't plant this one. As weird as that sounds, in my yard it seems to be fairly common to have "stuff" just pop up out of the ground. I can't tell you how many times I've had to stop the lawnmower short to keep from running something over. Luckily, most times I'm able to relocate it someplace else. I guess it's something to do with the dirt we've had brought in over the years. We had a palm tree pop up two years after we moved in and it's now about 30 feet tall...we priced it at Home Depot...about $150!!! Then one year we had tomatoes and corn growing in the front yard! The funny thing about the sunflower is I've tried to grow them before, but they never seemed to be able to support themselves and would fall over and wilt away. Now, here's one I didn't plant and it's growing great. I checked on it today, and the bud is starting to open. I'll take some more pictures in the upcoming days and post it's progress.
